Staying Involved This Summer
Activism can and should be done throughout the year, not just on Kick Butts Day. Use the resources and ideas from this site to stay involved all year long!
See what one of our youth advocates has to say:
Advocacy and activism in tobacco control, prevention, and cessation are such huge pieces of my life that I can't imagine letting them end with Kick Butts Day or only come once or twice a year. When you get involved in this work — really involved — it's a 24/7 job.
And it has to be: The tobacco industry never sleeps, so neither should we.
We constantly have to be on the lookout for new advertisements, schemes, products, etc., so that we can do our job as advocates and inform the public of how they are being conned and marketed to by Big Tobacco. That's why we do this all year-round. Taking a break is like giving Big Tobacco free reign over our futures.
What I've found to be helpful when trying to keep kids involved and motivated during the summer is to host fun, non-tobacco advocacy activities periodically throughout the year, and they'll be more motivated to come out for the real stuff. We're getting ready to hold a pool party in Greenfield, and we're inviting all of this year's VOICE members, and we're also inviting all of those kids to bring as many friends as they want. We're going to have a barbecue, play some kickball, that kind of thing. Not only will we be recruiting people, but we will also be forming more and more bonds with the people who we want to come back for the big demonstrations that we do.
